Through the program, candidates are placed in full- and part-time credentialing programs at colleges and universities while they also receive hands-on training as part of their regular jobs.

Los Angeles Unified is also experiencing a decline in overall student enrollment , losing nearly , students since , due in part to a growing number of students transferring to charter schools and in part to declining birth rates. That means the district requires fewer teachers than it did before. But district officials had feared it would be worse, because of skyrocketing housing prices in the city.

The district hired more than teachers for the new school year. To attract enough candidates, some districts expanded recruiting efforts in other states and abroad. Cardenas said Oakland was able to offer a higher salary and better benefits than her district in Texas. One increasingly popular hiring strategy is offering more money upfront.

Our current tenure process does nothing to mitigate this turnover. But if given more time to receive feedback and work with their mentors, new teachers could feel supported as they navigate those challenging early years. This would not only help new teachers go on to become effective educators but would also increase retention.

Right now, confidence in public education is low, and we are facing a looming teacher shortage.
